Kenya Football Federation Faces FIFA Ban as Government Demands Compliance with Sports Act 2013

•

In a mounting saga that has unfolded over months, the Kenyan Government, led by Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Sports Registrar Rose Wasike, has persistently urged the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) to adhere to the Sports Act 2013 and operate within the framework of the country’s laws.

Despite relentless efforts from football stakeholders, county football associations, and sports dispute tribunals, FKF, under the leadership of Nick Mwendwa, has consistently ignored these calls, relying on the protective shield of FIFA.

The central issue at the heart of the controversy is FKF’s refusal to comply with the Sports Act 2013, which would open up the election process to a broader range of football stakeholders, including County Football Associations.

This move would grant a voting voice to various football groups, potentially leading to a significant upheaval in the current FKF leadership. Compliance would also impose clear directives on term limits and other clauses that the existing administration exploits to complicate the federation’s operations.

Cabinet Secretary Namwamba recently issued a stern warning, asserting the government’s readiness to risk another FIFA ban on the Kenya Football Federation if it proves necessary to enforce compliance with the Sports Act and other relevant laws. Notably, FKF stands as the sole federation deliberately failing to align itself with the stipulations of the Sports Act 2013.

As the country stands on the brink of elections, the direction the current government administration chooses to take regarding FKF’s compliance holds significant implications for the upcoming CHAN and AFCON competitions, as well as the future of football in Kenya.

The battle between governmental authorities and the football federation reflects a broader struggle for transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law within the sporting realm. The outcome of this clash will undoubtedly shape the course of Kenyan football and determine its trajectory on the international stage.
