Janet Wanja, born on February 24, 1984, was a celebrated Kenyan volleyball player whose career spanned over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on both national and international platforms. She passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 40, after a courageous battle with gallbladder cancer.
Wanja’s passion for volleyball ignited during her time at Mukumu Girls High School, where she honed her skills and showcased exceptional talent as a setter. Her prowess on the court quickly caught the attention of national selectors, propelling her into the professional arena.
In 2004, Wanja began her professional career with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Volleyball Club. Her remarkable performances led to her selection for the Kenya women’s national volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, representing the country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Wanja wore the number 7 jersey, and the team finished in eleventh place.
She later joined Kenya Pipeline in 2005, where she played until her retirement in 2019. During her tenure, Wanja was instrumental in securing multiple national league titles and continental championships. Her exceptional setting abilities earned her the Best Setter award at the 2007 Women’s African Volleyball Championships, where Kenya emerged victorious.
International Achievements
Wanja’s international career was marked by significant achievements, including:
- Olympic Appearances: Represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021).
- Continental Success: Secured five continental crowns and three African Games titles with the national team.

After retiring from active play, Wanja transitioned into coaching, bringing her wealth of experience to the next generation of players. In 2024, she was appointed as one of the coaches for the Malkia Strikers, serving as a trainer during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the World Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
In late 2024, Wanja was diagnosed with a rare form of gallbladder cancer. Despite the support from her family and the Kenya Pipeline Company, which covered her medical expenses, Wanja succumbed to the illness on December 26, 2024, while receiving palliative care at her home in Nairobi.
Janet Wanja’s legacy extends beyond her on-court achievements. She was a trailblazer for women’s volleyball in Kenya, inspiring countless young athletes with her dedication, skill, and leadership. Her contributions to the sport have been lauded by peers, fans, and national leaders, including President William Ruto, who mourned her passing and acknowledged her impact on Kenyan sports.
