In the shadows of Kenya’s football arena, a glaring void in recognition looms large as the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) continues to overlook the individual achievements and efforts of players, leaving supporters disillusioned and prompting grassroots initiatives to fill the void.
Despite the unwavering dedication and exceptional talent exhibited by players, the absence of awards and substantial prize money, not just at the end of the season but also for monthly accolades, has left many feeling unappreciated.
The once-vibrant and competitive league has faced challenges, compounded by the lack of recognition for outstanding performances.
The last acknowledgment of the best league player and manager dates back to 2021 during Betking’s sponsorship, which, like other sponsors, ended in frustration under the Nick Mwendwa regime.
While the tide appears to be turning with FKF’s recent partnership with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and increased prize money for the league winners, the issue of neglecting monthly player and coach accolades remains unaddressed.
In a heartening display of grassroots support, a group of Kenyan football journalists and supporters, operating under the #FootballKE brand, have taken matters into their own hands.
Despite financial constraints, they have been fundraising to recognize the women’s player of the month, highlighting the passion and dedication the country has for the beautiful game.
Although the amounts awarded may be modest, these efforts underscore the importance of acknowledging individual contributions and the potential for growth when managed with care.
As the 2023/2024 season unfolds with renewed hope, the FKF must address this oversight to foster a football culture that truly values and rewards the exceptional efforts of its players and coaches.
